Female Entrepreneurs Are Ruthless

EntrepreneursThey are catty, ruthless and will do whatever it takes to climb the corporate ladder – are the female contestants on The Apprentice Australia making businesswomen look bad? Or is this indicative of all Australian entrepreneurs who happen to be women? Or is it down to the individual?

Melbourne contestant Carmen Parnos, a Melbourne mother of two, was forced to declare bankruptcy when her business went belly-up in the financial downturn, an event that left her humiliated and more keen to succeed.

While many entrepreneurs who have worked with women have found teamwork and collaboration are very much qualities that women bring to the boardroom, Parnos contends it’s common for women to undermine and sabotage one another to succeed in what is still seen as a man’s world. And the statistics show why some women feel they have to resort to sneaky tricks to get ahead.

An online survey of 200 working women by Sphinxx, a women’s business group, shows only 2 per cent of CEOs are women, 27 per cent have turned down a promotion because they lacked confidence and 44 per cent felt they had been overlooked for a top job because of their gender.

However, Suzi Dafnis, Australian Businesswomen’s Network community director, believes women are no more prone to playing dirty tricks than men. From her point of view, there are some people who will resort to playing dirty tricks when they are under extreme pressure. But that is down to the individual not the gender of a person.

Marilyn Bakes, a Women’s Network Australia member, is adamant that as a rule those that resort to such tactics don’t last.

To be a successful entrepreneur, you need to have the respect of your colleagues, peers and clients. So it doesn’t matter whether you are a man or a woman, being a sneaky weasel may get you a little way ahead for now but in the long run it’s down to your code of honour and conduct that people will react to.

Weird and Wacky Inventions are an Entrepreneur Opportunity

InventionsEntrepreneurs isolate a niche market and then provide a product or service that satisfies that gap in the market. An entrepreneur opportunity is often born from an inventive solution to a problem.

Portable gyms, two-man submarines and Wondercubes are among the wacky but smart innovations turning heads at the British Invention Show. Everyone from madcap inventors, first-time experimenters to mothers who’ve had a “Eureka” moment were at the annual gathering of creative pioneers in London.

These are true entrepreneurs. They see that there is a problem and they not only solve their problem in an innovative and exciting way but they provide a way for others to benefit from their entrepreneur opportunity.

Sometimes ideas are great but their execution is flawed.

Pep Torres, an inventor from Barcelona in Spain, has a business card in a red capsule. One person swallowed it. It took them two days to call.

Torres brought a handful of his innovations with him to the Show. They include scratch-off postcards, magnetic tea towels that stick to the refrigerator and a pressure-sensitive floor tile that keeps fridge raiders on their diet.

A voice will tell you “Hey! Put the cream cake down and back away from the fridge!”

Genius for midnight fridge raiders.

According to Torres, everyone is born to be an inventor. Everyone has a good idea to give to the world but the problem is to take that step and try to do it.
Great advice from a man who really thinks outside the box, and when it comes to your entrepreneur opportunity, your crazy idea to solve a pesky problem might just make you money.

Stress Relief from Your iPod

Stress reliefEntrepreneurs need stress relief. It is all important that they are able to distress from their work environment so that they are able to engage fully. Some may take personal time for massages or workouts and some hit the golf course. It’s a way to bash out some stress and walk and talk at the same time.

If you don’t play golf you may like to take a long bath after a gruelling work period. Bulgarian entrepreneur Fredy Vasilev, has invented Bathomatic, which lets busy people fill their bath at the touch of an iPod, to the right depth, temperature and aroma — and keeps the water warm.

They tried to create the ultimate house of the future and there were systems for controlling lighting, heating, music — and nothing for the bathroom so they satisfied that need. Their invention allows you to save energy and water.
This is a problem with a brilliant solution that is going to generate them a lot of money.

Another way to stay ahead of the game as an entrepreneur is to keep fit. It is a subject I am sure I will be blogging about again in the future, but stress relief and physical fitness go hand in hand.

Iranian telecom consultant, Ehsan Yazdani has invented a portable gym, a lightweight kit on which one can do 15 different workouts, which comes out before the New Year.

You can use it in a hotel, on long flights, in the office, anywhere as long as you have a chair. The exercise product was inspired by being an office worker spending 10-12 hours a day at the laptop.

Once again a problem has become not only a product, but a whole new business and life. Ehsan couldn’t find the time to get to a gym to workout and so he worked out a way to solve the issue and now his stress relief has become an entrepreneur opportunity.

Achieve Success by Exercising Your Mind

achieve successAs an entrepreneur, your mind and imagination are the most powerful skills you have in your arsenal in the business world. To achieve success is far easier when you harness the abilities you already possess.

Experts say that by learning one radically new thing every day and applying it to your life, you grow exponentially. Geniuses find unrelated things and put them together to come up with something new. You are only able to do that by adding to your repertoire of experiences and knowledge.

While seeming quite new age, try reflection. This is another way to allow the brain to find the new connections you’re looking for. Find a few times a day when you can turn off anything that electronically gets a hold of you and simply reflect on what your needs are and how things are going. This is where your mobile email is a problem. Don’t check your email before your reflection time or before you go to bed either.

Sleep is a very important part of your overall health and sense of wellbeing. Many entrepreneurs want to stay on top of business at all times but by checking your mail before bed or leaving your mobile on your bedside waiting for an important email means you wont sleep well at all. It keeps your mind awake by stirring up all of the unfinished cycles of action sucking your attention units into a whole new pattern of thinking.

Take time to slow down, breathe and just be, using the time for deep reflection. Be open to the ideas that come flooding into the channels of your mind and achieve success by implementing your experiences tempered with new creative vision.

By stretching your brain every day, you keep it young and smart. The combination of the wisdom from experiences and your constant new knowledge will be one of the most powerful innovation tools you will possess as an entrepreneur, and you will achieve success with a new sparkle in your eye and maybe even a swagger in your step.

Social Entrepreneurial education in Australia Gets a Boost

Entrepreneurial educationWithout entrepreneurial education a country’s financial future is in jeopardy and without social entrepreneurs our world would be a darker place.

Australia’s next generation have just been offered the key to a brighter future.

Social entrepreneurs are people who recognise social problems and use entrepreneur skills to organise, create, and manage a venture to affect social change. Their creative vision is channelled into making the world a better place.

The School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) Australia is a new non-profit venture based on the highly successful SSE in the UK which has been operating for 10 years. Their impressive team of trainers and support, including Social Ventures Australia, the SSE UK, and Steve Lawrence (a social entrepreneur and Chief Executive of the Australian Social Innovation Exchange) are all dedicated to entrepreneurial education. They specialise in identifying, developing and supporting social entrepreneurs and raising awareness and understanding of social entrepreneurship.

So now, year-long programs to support entrepreneurial education aimed at establishing effective, sustainable community projects and initiatives that meet social and community needs are available and the world will be changing for the better starting right here in Australia.

Dancing the Steps to Success in Her Teens

steps to successStarting a business at any age can be daunting. Most would expect a teenage girl to be worrying about boys, pimples or fashion and not the steps to success in business.

Jemma Nicoll started Inspire Dance Academy at the age of 16 after attending a dance conference run by Project Dance, a New York Company who shared a similar vision of working in the community with dance.

Combining her new business with the completion of her HSC was a massive challenge. The HSC is strenuous in itself, so balancing an entrepreneur business mixed with the physically demanding role of teacher forced her to push herself to the limit.

Although she was organised and had good time management skills it was time to put them to the test. A great support network of family and friends also helped to get her through long days and nights of study and dance.

Jemma’s approach to life and business was the same. Her obstacles became somewhat exciting to overcome, because she knew it was something she really wanted to accomplish…a little challenge couldn’t get in her way!

She has graduated and is now pouring all her energy into her business, changing lives and minds as she dances her steps to success.

Tips to Increase Your Entrepreneur Skills

Entrepreneur skillsMany successful business owners work on their entrepreneur skills constantly. They examine how people get things done and they are both natural thinkers and problem solvers.

Scott Halford, an internationally known speaker and writer on brain-based success behaviours, believes we get so busy running our businesses that all of our learning is either on the job or in life. However, there are ways to keep your mind in tip-top shape so that you are always engaged in the learning process.

His advice is to read one article a day written by someone with an opposing opinion. Studies show that your brain chemistry switches when you are met with competing knowledge or an opinion that flies in the face of your own experience.

Even if you become frustrated, push through, as it will help you when you have to make difficult decisions in your entrepreneur business. You will be able to hear other viewpoints and take an overall look at the problem at hand.

Also, teach someone something that you’re passionate about. The teaching process reveals new learning for you since people have different questions about what you’re teaching. It forces you to rethink your subject in new and challenging ways.

Surrounding yourself with people who don’t think just like you do is sometimes scary but be brave enough to have dissention and you just may learn entrepreneur skills you would never have dreamed of.

Lack of Sleep Hinders Personal Success

lack of sleepWhen you are starting a new business you will find that you don’t sleep very much. Personal success depends on you not only exercising and working, but sleeping too!

You need deep sleep. Many entrepreneurs will boast about only getting 2 or 3 hours a night, but research shows that neural connections are made when you’ve hit the deepest stage of sleep, and that occurs typically over a seven to nine hour period. To achieve personal success you need minimally 6 hours of good sleep and you need to be asleep before 2 am. Your brain manufactures different chemicals after that time for some strange reason and the sleep is different. If you go to sleep after 2am experts say you may wake up in the morning groggy, even if you get a full 6 hours. Being groggy and feeling like you are in a waking dream like state is not ideal for heading into an important meeting!

Thomas Edison solved this problem by grabbing short naps and working constantly. If you struggle to sleep, go for a long walk and look around you. Get out of your head and try and forget the problems by looking at the world.

So next time you are working yourself to the point of exhaustion, stop, take a breath and think about the last time you slept. Working until you can no longer concentrate on the problems at hand will not help you achieve personal success. Remember, we strive to be successful so we can enjoy our lives, which include snuggling up in bed occasionally.

Entrepreneur Opportunity in Online Publishing

developing authorsOctober has been an interesting month for women. Not only is it Women’s Small Business Month, but the publishing world is getting a shake-up from industry veteran Jane Friedman.

The former long-time chief executive of HarperCollins Publishers Worldwide has launched Open Road Integrated Media, which will publish e-book editions drawn from the backlists of well known authors and new e-books from unknowns.  Friedman expects to draw on the backlist of the late Michael Crichton, whom she published for years at HarperCollins.

Partnered with film producer Jeffrey Sharp (Boys Don’t Cry) they will be developing movies as well as developing authors’ “brands” through “enhanced” e-book editions and extensive online marketing campaigns. Their e-books will be readable on most platforms and have audio and video content embedded in them, including author profiles and mini doccies.

What a comeback for Friedman, who was spectacularly fired from HarperCollins, a division of News Corp., in June 2008!  The move by News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch stunned the publishing world at the time.

Well, this time it’s her turn!  The new company, released Wednesday at the Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany, means she is not only a shining example of a true entrepreneur, but a groundbreaking forward thinker.

So while some may lament the passing of the humble book, Friedman sees an entrepreneur opportunity and after a huge career setback steps to the fore and shakes the publishing world to its core.

Born With Entrepreneur Skills

Entrepreneur SkillsSome entrepreneurs are simply born with a business mind. They think in a way studying at uni can never teach you. Their entrepreneur skills are a part of their genetic makeup.

For many, their understanding of the marketplace and their free flow of ideas and ways to solve problems, or provide necessary services, is an extension of their natural personalities.

20-year-old Ryan Djurovich, who less than a year ago started an online marketing and web development business called Antevo in Melbourne, contends that if they can start up in a recession and be successful, they can survive anything. He proves that just because you are young, it doesn’t mean you can’t be successful.

His father was retrenched when Ryan was younger and he decided that he would never be in that position. His philosophy is if you work hard at your own business and get the results, no one can lay you off.

His instinctual entrepreneur skills are paying off and he is on his way to success, flying the flag for other eager young minds to flock to his independent banner.
