Entrepreneur Success Story – From Less Than Stellar Start to Huge Success

entrepreneur successI have blogged about the BRW young rich list and even the rich 200 list, but every now and again either an individual or a group literally jumps out and grabs my attention. Entrepreneur success stories are not rare but are exciting and inspirational, especially when the individuals have tried and failed elsewhere. It speaks directly to the indomitable spirit of the entrepreneur.

Meet Pipe Networks co-founders Bevan Slattery and Stephen Baxter. They have just sold their business to SP Telemedia after the pair had separately tried their hands at many IT businesses in various guises across different parts of Australia. The company is the culmination of a dream of two “nerds” and old friends who re-united to establish Pipe Networks.

When they began, it was a less than stellar start. The gloom of the dotcom crash was everywhere and tech was, if not a dirty word then, certainly it had baggage. The two entrepreneurs decided to do the only thing that business responded to; they sought to build their credibility by making a profit consistently.

A down-to-earth approachable pair, they are humble and very funny, but it is their passion that lights up a room. And it is their passion that not only drives them but has pushed them to succeed.

In just seven short years, they have managed to build the third largest network of fibre optic cable in Australia. Last year Pipe Networks went one step further, building an undersea cable between Sydney and Guam that links Australia, the U.S. and Asia, and provides international bandwidth at competitive prices.

This huge undertaking that was beset by funding problems and countless setbacks has finally yielded a windfall of $51 million. Perseverance pays off. Bevan Slattery and Stephen Baxter’s story certainly serves as inspiration that big dreams are achievable and entrepreneur success stories abound.

Australian Gaming Entrepreneur Success Stories

iPhoneAs computer games move from consoles to the mobile phone, Aussie companies are raking in the digital dollar and there are now multiple mobile gaming entrepreneur success stories. Not everyone can justify stumping up the hundreds of dollars for a console game player, but the potential market for games increases exponentially if they work on your phone.

Last festive season, while his team of 35 code cutters and graphic designers rested briefly from major projects such as Real Racing, Rob Murray had an idea for a little game that might be fun on an iPhone. This year the founder of the Richmond-based video games developer Firemint, is going to be able to buy just about anything he wants and his is a real entrepreneur success story.

The game is called Flight Control, a simple yet addictive challenge to guide aircraft onto runways without them crashing into each other. It pronounces loudly, “Good show” or ”Splendid”, when a plane lands successfully. With some cute graphics and retro music, it went on sale in the Apple App Store in March. A little over six months later, it has become a global phenomenon, selling an incredible 1.5 million copies worldwide!

Working on the game in his spare time and getting encouragement from any of his close friends or colleagues he showed it to, he kept going and their responses spurred him on to finish his project.

Most App Store applications cost just a few dollars, and at $1.19, Flight Control has attracted legions of buyers who were merely curious. So this year the holiday cheer is sure to be laid on thick, because he has become one of Australia’s entrepreneur success stories. Not bad for a holiday side project.

Entrepreneur Success Stories

entrepreneur successI love the diversity of ideas that span the entrepreneurial world. Entrepreneur success stories abound but sometimes, small pockets of inspiration strike at once in one corner of the globe.

Stefan Lazarou has a background in hairdressing but went on to spend most of his time in retail hospitality and become one of Australia’s entrepreneur success stories. Stefan, as he is widely known in the Brisbane community, owns about 50 salons in Queensland and New South Wales along with the Jo Jo’s restaurant and cafe above the Queen Street Mall.

Stefan’s Sky Needle, recovered from Expo 88, stands atop his headquarters in South Brisbane and is responsible for a light show visible across the city skyline every night.

It’s amazing what one can achieve. From a single start-up cutting neighbourhood hair to a finalist in the prestigious Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Business Awards.

TechnologyOne founder Adrian Di Marco won out against stiff competition to be crowned Brisbane’s Business Person of the Year at the annual Lord Mayor’s Business Awards.

He was recognised for great resilience in establishing and growing an internationally successful software company that has survived more than two decades.

The success of TechnologyOne, which provides integrated business software, has contributed to Brisbane’s international profile and reputation as a city and is one of their local entrepreneur success stories.

Bravo Brisbane.
